What is Power to Voices?

Power to Voices is a self-moderated, safe as possible digital platform that was created with the aim of supporting activists and human rights defenders in their efforts to promote social justice and create positive change. The platform provides a safe and inclusive space for activists to connect with each other, share their campaigns and struggles, and amplify their voices.

In addition to networking and campaigning, Power to Voices also offers peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and tailored learning opportunities. Activists can access relevant resources to strengthen their capacities, such as training materials, toolkits, and case studies.

The platform also serves as a hub for rallying solidarity, bringing together activists from different backgrounds and movements to support each other's struggles. Through these efforts, Power to Voices aims to build a stronger, more united global community of activists who are working towards a common goal of creating a more just and equitable world

What is a community?

A community of activists is a group of individuals who come together to promote a particular cause or social issue. These individuals may share common values, goals, and beliefs, and work together to create positive change in their communities or the world at large.

What is a group?

A group is a collection of individuals who come together for a common purpose or goal. The members of a group may share common interests, values, or characteristics, and they may work together to achieve a specific objective or engage in shared activities. 

In Power to Voice, members of communities can form different groups based on interests and affinities. 

 

How do I create a group?

Groups offer a way to organise events and discussions, and to connect with people around common interests.

There are three types of groups in the online community:

Public Group: this group content is visible to anyone who visits the community, even if they are not logged in.

Open Group: this group content is visible to anyone who logs in to the community, and anyone can join these groups.

Closed Group: this group content is only visible to members of that group, who can only join by being added by the group managers.

Steps to creating a group:

  • You can add a group by using the ‘+’ button in the header menu.
  • Then you can decide to create a public, open, closed or secret group.  Once a group is created, the group type can only be changed by the content or site managers.
  • You can choose one of the various join methods - open to join, invite-only, or request to join.
  • You can add members directly in bulk.
  • You can also add a group via the group overview page of your own profile.
  • When a group has a physical location,  it can be specified for this group as well.
  • The group manager, content managers, and site managers can edit the group information, delete and manage the memberships of all groups.
  • On top of that, content managers and site managers can manage the content within the group as well.
  • You can only delete a group managed by you.
  • A group can be deleted on the edit group page.
  • Note that deleting a closed group will also delete all of the posts, events, and topics created in the closed group.
  • As a site manager, you’re now able to configure if regular users can create groups or if this is only your content and fellow site managers can do within your community. You can find this new checkbox on the Group settings page under the Group permissions.
What is the difference between public and community visibility?

Contents (post, events, and topics) on Power to Voices have two visibility settings - public and community.

Public - All users, including those who have not logged in (anonymous users) can see this content.

Community - Only users who have logged in can see this content.

Note: If posts, events, or topics are created inside a closed group, the visibility of this content is forced to group members

Does Power to Voices have a social platform/function?

Yes, Power to Voices has social features that breathes life into the community. Users can create and share content from the community across various social media channels. Users can send and receive private messages, engage with posts - comment, like, reply, mention, view pages, get insight and analytics, stream events, etc.

How do I connect with others on this platform?

Just like any social platform, users are encouraged to:

  • Connect with people who share similar interests.
  • Find and promote community events.
  • Share your insights, interests, ideas, and reflections.
  • Interact with other members of the online community to develop new interests, ideas, and insights.
  • Learn about opportunities available and providing input on opportunities that you would like to see.
  • Be kind to one another.
  • Ask questions. Someone else will learn from every question that you ask.
  • Listen deeply. Seek to understand other perspectives and speak about your perspective, without seeing it as an absolute truth.
  • Be open and vulnerable. Share your plans, strategies, and goals, your challenges and successes, your personal development, your missteps, and the lessons you learned along the way.
  • Share opportunities that you are excited about.
  • Offer honest and encouraging feedback to each other, and to the community.
  • Stay on topic or start a new discussion.
  • Act affirmatively to clear conflict and maintain positive, mutually enhancing relationships.
How do I make a post?

Post allows users to leave a short message to the community on the mainstream, to another user on their profiles or to a group.

  • Users can add text and multiple images to a post.

You can directly add several images to any stream and create it either independently or within a new album, whether that is a person or a group album it doesn’t matter.

  • An author can edit or delete the post they created, while Site Managers and Content Mangers can edit and delete any posts from any users.
  • Author of posts and CM+ can edit and delete posts using the pointing down arrow.
Who sees my post?

This depends on the type of content and its settings. When you create a post, topic, or event, you have the option to set the visibility to public (anyone inside or outside the community can see it) or community, (only logged in members can see it). 

Regardless of the visibility setting, comments are only visible to logged in members. Activity can also take place within groups, which can be public, open, or closed.

How can I access resources?

Resources on Power to Voices allow members to efficiently access and use the shared knowledge on the platform like blogs and articles, books, news, videos, documents and much more.

  • Logged in users can access resources by clicking the 'resource menu.'
  • Click on the resource of interest (news for example)
  • Search by either content type, topic, country or subject
How do I ensure security to my account?

Power to Voice, as all software products should, has taken a no-compromise approach towards security. Protecting and securing our customers’ data is of utmost importance to us. We have multiple layers of defense to protect data from leakage, deletion, and theft. We also strive to protect the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of our customer’s data. Our practices and software ensure a high level of security for all projects.

Our key objectives are:

  • Ensuring customer data protection and trust. 
  • Minimizing security risks and vulnerabilities threatening the data. 
  • Compliance with international and industry standards.

We encourage users to take the following steps to ensure the security of their accounts:

  • Use strong and unique password
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Check privacy settings
  • Avoid suspicious links
  • Keep software up-to-date
  • Use a reputable antivirus software on your device
Is my data safe?

We tried to create a as safe as possible online environment but this is still an online environment and nothing is 100% safe.

We store the data of the platform on a server that is based within Europe and we comply with the European data privacy rules (GDPR). You can find more infomration about how we use your data in our Privacy policy


The data is accessible to users of the platform and the supplier for bug fixing and of course the team that manages the platform has access to the data. No data will be shared outside of this platform with third parties unless there is a legal requirement to do so.

While we have taken measures to secure your online safety it's still your responsability to be careful of what you share on the platform. Don't share data you don't need or want to share. Be careful sharing  privacy data like name, location, gender etc.

 

Can i report harrasement/abuse on the platform?

Yes, you can. In the down-facing arrow along the abusive content, click report and give a reason for how you find this offensive. The moderating team will review the content and take necessary action.
